AGEC has consistently advocated for successive governments to develop a truly comprehensive National Gender Equality Strategy, which address the causes not just the symptoms of gender inequality. The Federal Government’s release in March 2024 of Working for Women is applauded as a first important step towards that goal.
Since AGEC was established in 2018 we have argued that only when a comprehensive National Strategy is established by the Federal Government in active collaboration with every State and territory, the business community, non-government organisations and the broader community will Australia be capable of achieving gender equality.
The ten year plan set out in Working for Women provides solid ground for a stronger focus on the underlying causes of gender inequality, such as gender stereotypes, and identifying tangible outcomes by which to measure progress.
