The Australian Gender Equality Council’s FY23-24 Pre Budget Submission has doubled down on the call for a formal national gender equality strategy through a comprehensive consultation process and consideration of the utility and complexity of existing legislation and existing division of ministerial oversight.

The development of a National Gender Equality Strategy should be a key pillar of the 2023-2024 Federal Budget, supported by a Women’s Budget, gender mainstreaming analysis, a public education campaign and a material increase in investment in all aspects of gender inequality.

Given the marginal decline the gender pay gap over the past 20 years, ongoing gender segregation of industry sectors, unchanging gender role stereotypes, low levels of representation of women in leadership and politics, poor retirement outcomes for women relative to men and ongoing violence against women, AGEC believes that it is time that the Federal Government initiated a formal national gender equality strategy through a comprehensive consultation process including all key peak bodies like AGEC. Without it, Australia will not achieve gender equality.

AGEC’s pre budget submission identified this as a key pillar of the 2023-2024 Federal Budget, supported by a material increase in investment in all aspects of gender inequality.
